K oyna Earthquake of December 11, I967: Report of the Expert Committee on Electrical and Mechanical Equipment. UNESCO, No. 1489/BMS.RD/SCE, Paris , September, 1969, 52 pp. Hydroelectr ic power generators are common in seismic regions th roughou t the world and the i r abi l i ty to w i th s t and ea r thquakes is i m p o r t a n t to public welfare. There is very l i t t le informat ion in the l i te ra ture about the effects of ea r thquakes on such ins ta l la t ions ; hence, the repor t of the Exper t Commit tee should be of special in te res t to all who are responsible for designing and opera t ing hydroelectr ic plants . The repor t describes what happened at the power s t a t ion dur ing and af ter the ea r thquake and makes recommendat ions for improving the ea r thquake resistance. The magni tude 6.5 ear thquake , t hough t to have been tr iggered by the reservoir loading, centered about 3 km sou th of the dam. A s t rong-mot ion aecelerometer ins ta l led wi th in the 338-ft high, concrete g rav i ty dam recorded a peak accelerat ion of about 50 per cent g, wi th the frequencies in the mot ion being appreciably higher t h a n those shown by U. S. ear thquakes . The 540-MW electricgenerat ing s t a t i on was located about 8 km WNW of the dam. The effect of the ea r thquake on the dam has been described in a paper by G. V. Berg et al., The Koyna, Ind ia Ear thquakes , Proceedings of the Fifth World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, Santiago, Chile, 1969, and also in UNESCO Report of the Committee of Experts on Koyna Earthquake of December 11, 1967, New Delhi, 1968. The effect of the ea r thquake on the power genera t ing s t a t ion is summarized in the following descr ip t ion which has been abs t r ac t ed from the report .

Biological Anomalies around the 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake
The April 6, 2009 L'Aquila earthquake was the strongest seismic event to occur in Italy over the last thirty years with a magnitude of M = 6.3. Around the time of the seismic swarm many instruments were operating in Central Italy, even if not dedicated to biological effects associated with the stress field variations, including seismicity. Testimonies were collected using a specific questionnai...
متن کاملGeodetic Constraints on the 2014 M 6 . 0
On 24 August 2014, the M 6.0 South Napa earthquake shook much of the San Francisco Bay area, leading to significant damage in the NapaValley. The earthquake occurred in the vicinity of the West Napa fault (122.313° W, 38.22° N, 11.3 km), a mapped structure located between the Rodger’s Creek and Green Valley faults, with nearly pure right-lateral strike-slip motion (strike 157°, dip 77°, rake –1...
متن کاملPrediction of Permanent Earthquake-Induced Deformation in Earth Dams and Embankments Using Artificial Neural Networks
This research intends to develop a method based on the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict permanent earthquake-induced deformation of the earth dams and embankments. For this purpose, data sets of observations from 152 published case histories on the performance of the earth dams and embankments, during the past earthquakes, was used. In order to predict earthquake-induced deformation o...
متن کاملThe 2014Mw 6.0 Napa earthquake, California: Observations from real-time GPS-enhanced earthquake early warning
Recently, progress has been made to demonstrate feasibility and benefits of including real-time GPS (rtGPS) in earthquake early warning and rapid response systems. Most concepts, however, have yet to be integrated into operational environments. The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory runs an rtGPS-based finite fault inversion scheme in real time. This system (G-larmS) detected the 2014Mw 6.0 Sout...
متن کاملObservation of vertical electron density profile in inospheric E-layer during Indian-Ocean earthquake on December 2004 using CHAMP satellite
This paper describes the observation and analysis of vertical electron density before major earthquake above the Sumatra-Malaysia region during Indian Ocean major earthquake in 2004 in Aceh, Sumatra. The electron density profile in E-layer of ionosphere a few days before earthquake and a few hours after earthquake have been observed using the data from the CHAMP satellite. The data obtained fro...
متن کاملLuminous Phenomena of Earthquakes: Observations and Theories
Over the past few years, different theories (piezoelectric, positive holes, friction-vaporization, exo-electron emission, tribo- or fracture electrification) have been presented for the interpretation of earthquake lights. Although these theories can interpret earthquake luminous, each suffer from particular problems. There are also ambiguities and questions about the location of the light, the...
